I was just scrolling through Medium and came across a comment from a gun owner. He said he might be willing to bend on assault rifles if he didn’t believe the left’s real goal was to take away all guns. I’m sure he’s not alone in this position. That idea that some restriction will lead to total restriction is probably a factor that keeps many gun owners from supporting reasonable regulation.
What I wanted to address was this idea of the “left’s goal.”
I’m a progressive living in California. I’ve participated in marches for gun control, women’s rights, and Black Lives Matter. I am Lefty McLefterson living in Leftsville, USA.
Some other things I do are go to baseball games, play guitar, and try to keep my new houseplant from dying (it’s not going well).
I also get up each morning and go to work. And when I see on the break room TV that there’s been another school shooting, I wonder why my coworkers and I are going on like nothing has happened. I wonder what kind of shooting it would take for us to stop working for a few minutes. I think about where I would hide if there were a shooter in my office. I wonder if my coworkers with kids are silently sick with worry every time they see that familiar headline.
Most people you’d consider part of the left are a lot like me, by which I mean they’re a lot like you. We’re not out to get you.
So what are you afraid of?
Left-wing tyranny? Republicans control the house, senate, and White House.
Being left defenseless against some kind of break-in? Let’s be honest. You’re more likely to shoot a family member than an intruder.
Is it just me? The millions like me in “the left?”
There are all kinds of people who consider themselves progressive or liberal. What most of us want is for you to go on doing whatever you do, as long as you’re not hurting others. We’d just like a few laws that make it harder for people who kill to kill a whole lot of people.
I’m not going to tell you no one on the left wants to take away all your guns, because some do. But as we all know by now, legislative progress has been painfully slow. Considering we can’t even seem to institute effective background checks, a full ban is extremely unlikely. Regardless, I want to make it a little bit harder for us to kill each other.
Maybe, because of what I’ve told you about myself, you don’t believe anything I say. I’m probably not telling you anything you haven’t heard before. It has become harder and harder in recent years not to see the opposition as enemies. I probably can’t change that in a quick blog post. But I thought it was worth a try.
